The Context of Client Reception in New Town

To present a straightforward description of the work of the receptionist in the New Town office immediately following an analysis of reception practices in Borough, would be misleading without first highlighting certain basic differences in the circumstances in which the reception function was being performed in the two offices. Given that in both cases reception facilities were manned by clerical personnel and that both agencies were offices of a children’s department, the two cases could hardly be more dissimilar. A comparison between these two very different situations provides not only a background against which to view the reception practices in the New Town office, but also a number of hypotheses about how and why variations occur in the activities of reception staff. These are presented in the discussion at the end of this chapter. But first let us examine three differences between Borough and New Town which significantly influence the nature of their reception processes. These are differences between the agencies themselves, variations in the levels of client bombardment and in the reception facilities provided.
